CosmoGIRL Yanks ‘Vanessa Hudgens Arrested’ Story
March 5, 2008
Yesterday, the CosmoGIRL! website reported that High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens was arrested for underage drinking.
The story had no reliable source whatsoever, but they went with the story anyway. It was the height of irresponsible journalism.
It might be hard to believe, but Vanessa Hudgens was arrested for underage drinking, according to Back Seat Cuddler. The Disney starlet was hanging out at a Hollywood club when an undercover cop entered and began a random search for minors who were drinking. Even Vanessa’s mom called her daughter’s actions “stupid.” I just hope Vanessa doesn’t end up going down the same road as some other Hollywood starlets. Get it together, girl!
The irony is that their source for their story, Back Seat Cuddler (which had sourced the website WHYfame, which in turn had sourced…nobody), reported that the supposed arrest took place on Sunday in Los Angeles. However, there are multiple reports with photographic evidence that she was actually in Texas on Sunday filming the movie Will. It’s mighty hard to get arrested for possession of alcohol by a minor in California when you’re not even in the state.
Today, the story has been completely scrubbed from the CosmoGIRL website. When one tries to access the original story at www.cosmogirl.com/vanessa-hudgens-gets-arrested, the site redirects to the main page.
While it’s understandable that the website has now taken the unconfirmed story down, it’s simply not enough. We believe that they should restore the page with a correction explaining that the story was not accurate, and an apology would appropriate as well. Simply making believe that the story was never posted on the website just doesn’t cut it.
We took a screenshot of the cached page before it was yanked so there won’t be any “misunderstandings” later on; check it out here.
And if this sort of journalism offends you as well, please drop Editor-in-chief Susan Schulz a line at susan@cosmogirl.com. We’re sure she’d love to hear what you think about the matter.
UPDATE: CosmoGIRL apologizes!

Yes , Vanessa Hudgens Not was Arrested

I’m really glad a website finally came out and said this. I’ve seen the story in several places and knew it couldn’t be true due to the evidence that she was filming. This is what happens when people don’t check into the story they’re posting. I think CosmoGirl owes Vanessa a huge apology for tipping off another scandal. I think they all do when it was so obviously fake.
that is the most stupid thing i have ever heard.
and how can you post a story when you don’t even have proof
talk about rumors
I LOVE VANESSA NO MATTER WHAT AND I KNOW THIS STORY ISN’T TRUE

Hi, I am just now finding out about this. I think that’s hilarious! I mean, I wrote that story…I thought it was an interesting read and great entertainment! I had no idea someone as allegedly credible as CosmoGIRL would find it and cite it as actual news. I mean, a lot of the things written on Backseat IS actually factual, but if I find an interesting story I’m going to pass it along. People should know better than to take anything written on a celebrity gossip site with anything more than a grain of salt! And you heard that one straight from the source!
Jebbica
This “Jebbica” doesn’t write the stories as she continues to claim even here. She steals them verbatim from the people that actually wrote them and then claims that she “wrote” the story. Hopefully the people who have the actual copyright to their own material will crack down and sue her for trying to pass off their work as her own. She actually provides links to the locations that she steals from, which is not a legitimate citation, because she has no shame for her thievery. This kind of behavior is both illegal and despicable.
Sorry about that last comment. That day and that story had me in a frenzy and not feeling very well about the whole situation. But, to reply to John’s comment, the “ripping off” is something bloggers do called Block Quoting, where we back up our claims with what someone else said, and we link to their story. It isn’t illegal, it’s a common practice. But, I was an ass, and really embarrassed that the story that CosmoGIRL linked turned out to be false. We try to get it right, and if we see something on more than one site we sometimes assume that there’s some truth to the claim, but you know what often happens when you “assume”…and I’ve made an ass out of u and me!
Sincere apologies, and I hope all will be forgiven and forgotten soon.
