The Brave One (Jodie Foster, Terrence Howard) Takes US #1

September 17, 2007

Jodie Foster The Brave OneJodie Foster has taken to her new role as action queen with style and grace, with The Brave One being the third film in her protective and yet butt-kicking oevre, following Panic Room and Flightplan.

And the audiences love her for it — The Brave One has taken the top spot in the US box office this weekend with a take of approximately $14 million.

Take that, Anna And The King!

“Women are really responding to the movie even though it has its violent moments,” said Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution at Warner Bros as quoted by the Los Angeles Times. “That’s encouraging, and we positioned the movie at a time when we’ve got room to run.”

Hitting the number two spot was the western 3:10 to Yuma, showing strong legs since last week’s debut with a take of about 9 mill.  This was closely followed by Mr. Woodcock, which also came in at around the nine mark.  Don’t worry — the New Line comedy isn’t winning critical acclaim, either.

Under-the-radar Dragon Wars surprised with a $5.3 mill showing to take fourth, and Superbad keeps chugging along, taking the fifth slot with $5.2 million.

Next week Good Luck Chuck, Resident Evil: Extinction, and Sydney White enter the fray.

Juno Trailer (Ellen Page, Michael Cera) Hits

September 17, 2007

Juno Trailer Diablo Cody Ellen Page Michael Era The Juno trailer has arrived.

Juno comes from the creative mind of wunderkind Diablo Cody, is directed by Jason Reitman, and stars Ellen Page, Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner, and Jason Bateman among others.

MCN’s David Poland has teased the film by saying: “Take one part Rushmore and two parts Ghost World and mix with Mean Girls and you get Juno, a very arch comedy about a teen girl who takes being a pregnant teen somewhere often unexpected.”

How can anybody pass up a flick with that kind of pedigree, I ask you?  After showing at the Toronto Film Festival, many proclaimed it to be this year’s Little Miss Sunshine.

And the preview does not disappoint either.  Has witty, hip, and warm written all over it.   Don’t be surprised to see a Mott The Hoople renaissance once this movie hits.

Random factoid:  “All The Young Dudes” was actually written by David Bowie.

Check out the trailer here.

Braben: Nintendo Wii’s Manhunt 2 Shouldn’t Be Made

September 10, 2007

Manhunt 2 for Wii PS2 PSP

As you may have heard by now, Manhunt 2 has been trimmed down and is now slated for release on Wii, PS2 and PSP on Halloween. in North America.

Even with the new cuts, however, there’s still a contigency of people out there who believe the game should have been never made at all.

Daniel Braben, the man behind Elite in the old days and founder of Frontier Developments after that, feels that Gears Of War’s rating of 18 lessens the meaning of the rating systems and prompts parents to ignore the system.

“This means that when a more genuine 18 comes along, parents assume it is no worse than Gears of War, and is perhaps why Manhunt 2 was banned, as they felt they could not give it the same rating as Gears. Having said that, from what I’ve heard of Manhunt 2 (I haven’t had the chance to play it), it is not the sort of game the industry should be making, as it is inevitably going to attract controversy,” he said in a recent interview.

“While it might have brought short term gain to Rockstar, it damages the reputation of the industry as a whole, long term. We do need a strong, consistent rating system, where 18 really means it, and is enforced, and then it may be more acceptable to make such games, or to bring in an additional rating (as in the US) of Adults Only - which are only sold in very restricted places.”
